I found this post very interesting. Geeks who can see the big picture are rare animals -- probably destined for top management in companies that really make a difference. The post reminded me of the book "The Mythical Man Month", by Frederick Brooks.
In this book, Brooks likens the sort of team required for a big software product like his IBM OS360 with a surgical team, made up of diverse talents. Some of the people on the team might seem to be
doing quite trivial and unimportant work -- like keeping records or keeping a running tally of the tools that the surgeons are using.
But if nobody does that job, you are going to have the patient
sewn up with some of the tools left inside ;-) So a really successful big project requires a diversity of "skills" working together. Without building such a diverse team you can't take on really big projects. Organization and diversity and the right balance of talents is what makes the difference -- a team of reasonably talented people working together as a team can "often" (or even "usually") beat a single very talented individual working alone. "The whole is worth far more than the sum of the parts".

These are good points, the second out especially stands out, but they all effectively work, to my mind. Unfortunately, I am not much of a designer, but it is never late to try.

Well. I used to be a designer myself. At the very start of my career. So I truly understand your message. You gave those youngsters some good advice. You should be proud.

I never really thought of it before, but after reading this I have to agree about the importance of a good design. I like how you mentioned design in terms of coding but you also expanded it to include Giuliani's design for fixing the crime problem in New York. Whether a person or company is creating a program, performing a service, or planning for the future, putting time and care into the overall design will ultimately help lead to the best end result.
