I definitely agree about the trailing slash issue. We need to fix that!

Here is something you can add to your .htaccess file to redirect all non-trailing slashes URLs to URLs with slashes.

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(.*)/$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ %{REQUEST_URI}/ [L,R=301]

A technique adapted from: http://enarion.net/web/htaccess/trailing-slash/

One tiny thing I noticed is the trailing slash handling.
Google basically says, a decision for one version + 301 redirect from the other would be good ( http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.de/2010/04/to-slash-or-not-to-slash.html ).

At the moment in SilverStripe both pages exist ( =double content). May this could be changed in upcoming versions. Neat post. Doesn't look to be any new features with SS3 to enhance SEO further apart from speed and interface but SS is much more powerful than other CMS tools even in 2.24.

I'd also say that organisations should think upfront about their SEO strategy starting from mapping the keyword phrases they are targeting to pages through to what tools they will be using - social media, blogging, affiliates, partners etc - all aid SEO. We provide a free strategy for clients using our booking system which covers all this and how they tackle SEO within SS.

Overall the on-page SEO in Silverstripe is perfect but there's a lot more people need to think about.

I would like to see some attention directed towards some of the technical issues with SilverStripe regarding SEO - maybe creating a dedicated forum for SEO would be an idea?

You mention that DC is a major concern, yet SS has the option to visit every page with many different URL's:
/about-us
/about-us/
/?url=about-us
/?url=about-us/ and many others.

Looking into the module linkmapping, i had to give up, since it will not allow for redirects from index.php sites (SS uses this also so the redirect controller will never kick in)

The list is long and i would love for us to start eliminating some of these issues. I'm not a skilled programmer, but i'm willing to pay my SEO partner to write up a list of things that needs attention in SS.
