Google Sitemaps running out of memory

I'm running into a problem with Google Sitemaps. Requests to sitemap.xml are failing with out of memory errors, like so:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 94371840 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 8388608 bytes) in /path/to/sapphire/core/model/Hierarchy.php on line 240
Does anybody know if this is normal behavior? I'm not sure I've got a problem somewhere, or if Google Sitemaps is just really memory-hungry.
