ecommerce v0.5.4 and SS v2.3.7 ???

Hi all,
does anyone know if ecommerce v0.5.4 and SS v2.3.7 are compatible? I've been configuring (mostly learning) the ecommerce module for the last few days, and it works pretty well. Getting some uncertain results when purchasing on the paypal sandbox, mainly IPN isn't working and product orders aren't getting their status updated before and after paypal (the IPN issue is probably tied into this).I applied the paypal "fix" spoken of here http://silverstripe.org/archive/show/42312#post42312
I'm sure I can stumble my way there eventually but thought some of your thoughts might speed things up

ecommerce 0.5.4 doesn't really work on SS2.3.x
There's a thread (pinned at the top of the ecommerce module forum) with a link to ecommerce 0.6beta that separated the payment module and will work (with a lot of encouragement) on v2.3.7 - there are also some efforts that have it working on SS2.4.0 or you could just use the payment module on it's own and build your own catalogue/cart classes.

I've seen the payment module there before but thought it just handled DPS. I downloaded it now and I see the paypalpayment class. I'll give that ago thanks!
