Why is the CMS Workflow so Slow and Upgrading Errors

The CMS workflow module slows silverstripe down to a halt for authors who have to go through the workflow. For administrators saving a page takes about 5 seconds, while the same task as an author takes about 15 seconds. Can this be sped up at all? Content managers for the site hate how slow it is, and I can't blame them.

Also, I'm on SS 2.4.2 but when I upgrade to SS 2.4.5 the cms workflow breaks the site. I get an error when trying to save. If I remove the module everything works as expected. I'm using CMS workflow 1.0rc4. I tried the newest on the svn and still no dice.
