event calendar not installing

I am running an Intranet page using Silverstripe 2.4.1 and tried to get the Event Calendar registered. I had the calendar working in an older version of Silverstripe on a different machine.
Here is the main problem:
When I copy the un-gzipped folder (event_calendar) into my website root, the home page will no longer work.If I move the event_calendar out of the web root folder, the pages work again.
A db/flush does not run normally....where I get feedback of the changes etc.
What am I missing?

Uncle Cheese...when I move the ungzipped folder into my web root. I can no longer get access to any pages. The home page from Silverstripe will no longer display. I am basically looking at a blank page.

Sounds like you need to turn on your error reporting in PHP so you can see what's going on.

I did have the error reporting turned off. That should give me something to follow up on.
