CMSWorkflow and Versioned DataObjects

Is it possible to use CMSWorkflow with versioned DataObjects? I've had a quick look at the code, and the naming scheme is definitely very SiteTree-centric. However, it looks like the code itself might be generic enough to work with DataObjects that use the Versioned extension.
So, is it possible? Has anyone tried this?
