userforms publshed field length

SS3.0.1, userdefinedforms -
Modifying form.css (simple theme) I've had to set div.field width to 150%+ in order to display the published content to display at a normal field length (approx 36char). If set to 100% the field display lengths would be about 10 char.. Is there a default length or someway to override the form.css in themes or is this a safe guard for the mobile view of the theme..
