Manually subscribing member to mailinglist

Hi,
Bit of a silly question, but ......
I've been trying to figure out an elegant way to manually subscribe a member to a newsletter (in this case, after a sale has been made) , but can't really come up with one.
It seems like it is a matter of adding a member to the right membergroup, but if I go that route , I'm afraid my code might break in a next upgrade of the newsletter module ....
Is there an API I can use to subscribe people ?
