1) Update your SVN. I just checked in the change.
2) Yes, it's very easy to do, but you need to get a feel for how everything works. In the SS Wiki, you'll find a document called "Recipes: Extending the Event Calendar". It very thoroughly describes the process of adding custom fields. The module is made to be extended.
