.... Our firm deals with this problem on a daily basis. We have a lot of angry clients, and can certainly relate to your frustration. I'm shocked that this isn't a higher priority issue for SS NZ.

It is a high priority for us as well UncleCheese thats why a team of devs here in SS NZ created the Sphinx module. For most of our clients now we are deploying sphinx based engines for searching. The good thing with sphinx is it works on most shared hosting so we're trying to remove as many barriers to entry as possible. It won't replace the internal search - which could be improved dramatically but AFAIK they decided on sphinx as to not reinvent the wheel considering that gives us so much more functionality.

Thanks, Will. Didn't mean to throw you guys under the bus.. we always welcome your insight and solutions, and Sphinx appears to be mature enough to implement on a production site, and it's fairly well documented. I guess my frustration and surprise is just that it's so under the radar. It seems to be a very esoteric approach that I had to tease out of the development team. Do you think we'll start seeing this offered as a more mainstream solution in the near future? Tutorials/recipes? Maybe roll it into the core?

Well it won't be rolled into core as not every site will require it and setting up sphinx may provide additional barriers of entry to SS it will stay as a module.

The reason it is under the radar is that it was only publicly released yesterday! it had a soft launch to see how it goes before it'll be prompted via the blog. Its been under svn for a little while.

This is a slight change from what we have done historically. Now releasing modules we're going to be a little bit more professional to ensure the quality is high and users have a good experience. If we advertised the module and it was still under development then people will get frustrated with the 'poor' quality and constant changes. So its a balancing act between releasing functionality early and making sure its stable enough.

A developer preview was introduced nearly a year ago so it hasn't been 'hidden' as such. Developers have been notified of it but it wasn't ready for mass consumption till recently http://groups.google.com/group/silverstripe-dev/browse_thread/thread/806ad81c142c9652/5862299a6b6a2b7d?lnk=gst&q=sphinx#5862299a6b6a2b7d

Hi Will, it looks like 0.2 hasn't been tagged yet in svn.

@fredc if you notice anything wrong with the module or the module listing (like that missing release branch) email the module owners. Their emails are in each modules readme.

@UC - I have been trying to get this to work on a 2.4 site and seem to be having the same issues as Xurc in that it updates the db but then just doesnt find any of the DO's in the search. I had a look at the Sphinx module and it looks great but as this site is on Shared hosting without SHELL access I couldn't fine a way to install Sphinx. Then I tried to find ur Google search module but I guess you havn't / can't release it?

Any ideas what might be stopping it working? I had a quick look through but couldn't see anything obvious....

Thanks UC

....anyone? :(

I have spent the last few weeks trying to get Sphinx working to no avail (Server related problems)....all I really need is DO searching so this would be great, but as I mentioned I can't seem to get it to work with 2.4....has anyone got it working?

Thanks for any help

Nobody?

Surely I can't be the only person needing to search DataObjects in 2.4?!
