Is it possible to add tracking data to a Newsletter?

Many paid-for bulk emailing services offer full view and tracking statistics to their customers. Is there any way to add this functionality to the Silverstripe Newsletter Module, or would adding Google Analytics code to the Newsletter HTML template work?

It's a question which I'm often asked, and many of my customers won't use the SS Newsletter module simply for this reason.
