    I am wondering about how to integrate existing code like say shopping carts or prewritten phpClasses, in particular ZendFramework modules. Easy? Difficult? Any examples?

    There's examples of third party systems already in the main packages, e.g. Auth OpenID, etc, which show that its quite simple.

    Its really up to the quality of the code of the package you're integrating with.
