assets directory password protected

Hello
I have some directory with files that can be downloaded only by people who know password. So I added .htaccess file to protect it, but when I'm trying to access this files ss ( I think ) redirecting me to standard error page. When .httaccess is removed everything works fine but there is no password protection:)
Anybody could help me?
