Whenever I log in to the admin area of my SS install it takes a long while for it to finally reach the editing portion. Seems like there's a lot of transferring of files going on. Also when I'm in there editing it seems like there's a wee bit of a delay to do things. Not to mention the time delay when switching to viewing Files / Images and around the other areas.
I'm sure this is not just my imagination and will hope to find some time to setup a profiling tool to get some hardcore data ... but just wondering if this speed issue will be addressed in the next release?

Even when I go to demo.silverstripe.com (regardless of computer or browser), it takes longer than it should to load, and in FF get quite a lot of "Waiting for demo.silvertripe.com" .. to "Transferring data from demo.silverstripe.com" flickering while the SS logo just sits there.

I wonder if there's some bottlenecks somewhere because on a shared host this seems worsened.

I guess what I should be asking is: anyone way to speed things up?

Thoughts?

Thanks

There are a number of performance related things we are doing, one which is specific to the loading of the administration interface is in the new versions we've combined multiple javascript and css files. In current versions there around around 100 files to download, in the new version there are around 10, which reduces the latency and in some basic tests has improved the loading time by a factor of 2-3.

You can expect to see this specific improvement in the next major release within the next few months.

Hi all...

That is _very_ good news Tim !!

Kuma : for the time being you could install a PHP cache/optimizer. I use Xcache (someone from Silverstripe gave me the tip) and it works wonders on perfomance. SS still won't be exactly flying, but it helps a lot.

Xcache ... hmm, never heard of that one, will have to give it a shot.
I was thinking of trying ionCube but haven't had much time ... on projects in the past, it worked good for pre-compiling the code and making it a touch faster ... but if the underlying code is not organized properly, can only do so much.
Still, I'll probably hold out on for the next version of SS for the bigger sites I'm doing ... low hit sites are good for now.
