Integration of languages - i18n and 2.2.1 - menu label translations missing!

Hi,
I have been on 2.2.1 because we were having issues with the 2.2.2 and i18n. We inadvertently updated the site to 2.2.2 and because it wasn't working quite right I reverted back to 2.2.1In both versions I can't read the menus in silverstripe backend (eg. page name, navigation label, description, meta description etc). They only appear in the default language.
Can anyone help? For some reason I had them before upgrading to 2.2.2 and now i am back on 2.2.1 and i can't see them...
