Behavior of file upload in Files & Images tab

If I upload an image through the upload tab in Files & Images, Silverstripe changes the file name in that it removes underscores for instance... why is that?
(I never use it, I always SFTP into my server, but I just want to know because clients do sometimes use that kind of functionality, even if you tell them not to.)
