user verification on registration

Hi
i'm looking around for some possibilitys to secure the login process
only a little bit, by sending an email back to the 'new user'."User has to confirm his registration via visiting a webpage
which link he get's via email."As far as i can see, forum registration is the only sample
to get an 'immediate user-account' but no email back-sending.would be happy for any hint or sample how to do this...
