I would like to contribute to SilverStripe with the Social Network / Directory Module.
To continue with it I expect guidance and support from the SilverStripe community.

I took part in the SilverStripe Sinhala translation and now I am interested in taking part of some hacking too. So I would like to join this venture..

This sounds like an interesting project. The phrase "Social Network / Directory Module" covers a lot of possibilities.

Nivanka, could you perhaps describe what sort of an application you had in mind?

FYI, we had this starter as an idea in this years' Google Summer of Code application. This provides an idea of what the SilverStripe core team would love to see. However, anything you bring to the table that is of use to a large number of SilverStripe users is great.

A generic module which lets “members” create an account, create listing within a directory, edit that listing, some sort of billing of members for their listing in the directory.

Think of both the simple end (silverstripe.com members uploading their ‘showcase’ sites and widgets) through to a sophisticated online social network.

* Note we have the notion of membersignup form, newsletter system, forum, shopping cart members, blog, etc, and this should fit together somehow.
* Social Network Portability is a big issue. Can this module let people build social networks that play nicely with each other?

I am is really thrilled for that you all replied to my idea of contributing to SilverStripe.
I started writing up a proper project proposal and will submit it as soon as I finish working on it.

Nivanka,

I am rebuilding a site which should be ready to launch in about one month. This currently users the forum module but has a custom registration form.

The existing site which this new site is replacing has a member base of about 8000 users. Once the first version of the site is out I will be working on a user profile module - so count me in.

Cheers
