File Permission issues at installation phase Link to this post

Hi folks. I have successfully uploaded all my files within a good hosting environment. Having ensured all my other 'requirements' are correct I see I have this as the last issue:

Is the .htaccess file writeable?   User needs to write be able to write to this file: /var/www/vhosts/mywebsitename/httpdocs/.htaccess.

I have tried to change the file permissions within my FTP client, but it causes a PHP error to occur in the browser. Well... now I'm stumped. Can someone help me to progress please? Many Thanks.
