Asset Security

I am uploading files into assets which should not be publicly viewable. I have correctly configured "access" and security settings for pages within the cms, but when I want to share pdf or other formats which are linked to via a "Redirect" page, I am exposing those files to public view.
How does one set access on assets within the Silverstripe framework?
