On the default theme, the pictures when left aligned have no padding. Adding it manually in the HTML doesn't work it gets stripped out or something - either way text looks utter rubbish when so close the picture, how can I force it to actually have some padding.

The easiest way is to use Firebug to get the CSS class/id for the element and modify it in layout.css so it sits the way you want.
