Pagination_a lot of it here but can't find

I have small news template, very similar to tutorial, and my question is how to set $limit form..$var to $var because I can't do pagination when I'm showing for example 3 first pages sorted by date...i want to have simple navigation with next and prev links...(0..3,4...7,etc.).I know it's somwhere in documentation but it's no a piece of cake for me now. Could somebody help me??

ok, i need just one more argument in function, in php template because when i did it from ss something was wrong.
