Custom Template for TableField

When I run $table->setTemplate("MyTableField") I always get an SSViewer error saying "none of these templates could be found..."
When I pass it in as clearly as possible, however,
$table->setTemplate($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] . "/my_module/templates/MyTableField.ss");
It works..
I shouldn't have to do that, should I? Seems ugly.
