Hi,
Is the form part of this out of date? Is it neccessary to create a ContactPage type, unless you want to use it as a holder for a few contact forms?

No, that tutorial describes creating a static from from scratch.
The form builders from the CMS work well for small "contact" forms, but for more complex ones it's not the best way to do it.
