Initial Load Time

Hello all,
Our install of SS is suffering a little on the initial load of the site, at the moment it takes about 10secs to start loading the homepage. However once you are in it is fine and browsing to other pages is ok.
It is currently sitting on the Media Temple Grid Server.If anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated.
I have made the changes to the staleManifest() which helped overall site performance.
