OSCON includes free open-to-public evening sessions organised by those attending the event. I've organised one specifically for SilverStripe, and Leslie at Google has organised one for Google Summer of Code. I'll post more details and promote these more soon, but I wanted to give you all the soonest notice so that as many of you American GSOCers can attend? :)

SilverStripe Open Source CMS as an example of Open Source projects in New Zealand

Track: BoFs (Birds of a Feather)
Date: Monday, July 23
Time: 6:30pm - 7:30pm
Location: D137-138

Moderator: Sigurd Magnusson, Chief Marketing Officer, SilverStripe (open source CMS)

SilverStripe is a PHP5/MySQL-based product that is both a content management system (ala Joomla!, Drupal etc) combined with a rich extendable framework for building websites and web-applications (ala Ruby On Rails, CakePHP).

While SilverStripe shares all the buzzwords like MVC, AJAX, Web Standards, we realise how difficult it is to build and maintain complex websites.

We are passionate about improving this and differentiate ourselves by putting the user first (important for open source!) and using contemporary technology (e.g. we consciously don’t support PHP4 because making it PHP5+ allows us to do elegant object oriented code as found with RoR).

Sigurd Magnusson, CMO, and Sam Minnee, CTO, will provide an overview of what's happening with Open Source in New Zealand, a background to why and how we started the project, and provide an overview of the SilverStripe product.

(We are a part of the Google Summer of Code, and are hoping that some of our students will be attending too).

See http://www.silverstripe.com for details.

Our flights go directly from New Zealand to San Francisco but should we plan something that goes to Europe then perhaps you'd be able to meet us enroute given they always have an Asia stopover ...
