Going mad...

16 October 2007 at 8:27am
Hi All,
I have been trying to install SS on my PC at home for what seems like years now, I am using Uniform Server as I find it the best WAMP out there. Now I just cant get SS to install, like everyone else I get permission errors after the installer is done installing the tables in the DB. Now I have been using systems like Wordpress and Drupal for ages and I have never ever had any problems with permissions... I have set the windows permissions as well and all is ok but still cant install it.
I really want to use SS and use it for my clients but at the moment I think I will leave it for the moment. Shame as its such as fantastic piece of kit!
If someone has some idea how I can get this to work with my current setup (dont want to install lighthttp!!) then that would be much appreciated!
Best regards,
john -

as I find it the best WAMP out there
maybe try the standard WAMP package - http://www.wampserver.com/en/ that would have to be our favourite package (for those on win) and it works
which is handy.
I'll download a copy of uniform tonight and see if I have any issues and if I stumble upon a fix ill let you know

Thanks allot willr! I will install it if I still cant get SS to work on Uniform Server, but I think its worth having a look at how SS works on Uniform since you are a developer and there are allot of Uniform server users outs there.
Please let me know if you have any news?
Thanks again and keep up the good work!!

for any helpful answers, we need a bit more info here:
- what kind of "permission errors" do you experience? apache? php? mysql?
- can you post your apache/php-configuration? (http://pastie.caboo.se is handy for this, please make sure not to include any passwords)cheers

Hi ingo,
Sorry should have said what my config is, but this is the main errors I get when I try to install SS on both WAMP and Uniform Server:
Is the .htaccess file writeable?
Unable to detect whether I can write to files.
Please ensure C:/www/cms/.htaccess is writable. Is the mysite/ folder writeable?
Unable to detect whether I can write to files.
Please ensure C:/www/cms/mysite is writable. Is the tutorial/ folder writeable?
Unable to detect whether I can write to files.
Please ensure C:/www/cms/tutorial is writable. Is the assets/ folder writeable?
Unable to detect whether I can write to files.
Please ensure C:/www/cms/assets is writable. And I get the same error when I use Uniform Server, its the CHMOD that I and most people on Windows cant get around.
Hope this helps
Thanks Guys!!! -

You mention "Unable to detect whether I can write to files." which is a warning more than an error. Is the install button greyed out, or if it does let you click install, does it then fail?
It may be you can tell the installer not to be concerned, and install anyway, if the webserver can in fact write to these locations.

Hi Sigurd,
I tried to go ahead with the install and it gave me a warning saying that I dont have permissions to write to the rewritetest.php file.
Any help?
Thanks

Could you paste in the message?
Have a go at commenting out/bypassing the warnings, and let us know if the thing actually works. I.e. to work out if the installer is just being overly cautious, or correct.
Ultimately, all the installer is doing is writing a few lines to /.htaccess and /mysite/_config.php. You can hand-write these changes, and side step the "installation" altogether.
