Exclamation Point Escaping Word Count in Paragraph Summary

So I am using a modified piece of code for the Paragraph Summary on the Blog Holder page. The code snippet can be seen here:
http://silverstripe.org/blog-module-forum/show/9876#post273570I have one blog post that has a "!" in one of the first sentences. That seems to be escaping the word count. Is there any way around this? And why is it escaping the word count?
