'Slippage' in FlexSlider??

My client has very specific requirements for this kind of layout but it's causing me all kinds of grief!

Firstly, the FlexSlider module wants to expand to the full width of parent DIV and I can't get caption to sit out to left hand side -- if I make slider smaller caption disappears 'out of frame'. Solution (more that somewhat ugly): include background colour as part of image and style caption to sit over this kind of image.

Secondly, we have sideways 'slippage' (see attached PNG -- yellow area). Specifically when a slide is displayed the image area extends off side of page (I have no idea where this is coming form or why).

And because I have included base colour in slide I need to use conditional logic to change slider to a static image for smaller screen widths (still need to figure this out -- I'm a designer, not a programmer).

And finally there are other more 'normal' instances of 'flexslider' on site -- so I can't butcher the template or styles up TOO much!

This has been bugging me for months. Anybody have any advice they care to share?
