I have created a SMF driver for auth_external... it works rather well...
I am sure someone could improve the code, but it does what I need.
It's attached for anyone that wants to mess around with it.
I have no idea where to begin with trac, don't know how to submit it to that.

with trac just go to open.silverstripe.com, sign up. Create a new ticket and fill out the fields!
now supports returning name and email address.
code tidy up.
