Is there a way to set permissions in the admin section for the frontend?

So that people (guests) have less access to a certain number of pages and when they login they have access to more pages.

Yes, there is an "access" tab on all the pages you create by default. From here you can setup groups with members in the security section of the website, then just give select groups permission to view the page in the access tab.

There is even a generic setting for 'only logged in users' which allows any user that is registered to view the page. Take a look.
