A client of ours came up with a suggestion for new feature in CMS: for SEO purposes, it would be nice if meta fields had a character count, similar to Twitter's, where you could see how many characters your meta content has.

What do you think, is this worth pursuing?

There was this module that I came across a while back (haven't used it in any projects as yet):

https://github.com/hubertusanton/silverstripe-seo

could be worth checking out on the SEO side of things to see whether it implements a title and description count. If they don't perhaps you could fork the module, implement it yourself and submit a pull request to the module owner.

Best practice from what I know is title tag should be around 70 characters and description tag around 140-150 characters.

See http://moz.com/learn/seo/title-tag and http://moz.com/learn/seo/meta-description for some more detailed info, always found Seomoz a good source of SEO related useful tips.
