Is there a list of reserved words for field names?
Today I discovered I couldn't name a field Email and have the data saved when editing. I changed the field name to Emails and it now works using updateCMSFields.

It depends on the object you have overriding. Have a look at the $db array of the parent classes. Member for instance will have fields already defined like FirstName, Surname, Email etc..
