data exports not showing non-latin characters

we have a site where users register...many of these people are either from non-uk locations of have names which use non-latin characters.

these show OK in the silverstripe database, but don't export to the csv/excel properly... this is a real headache for us and means that we can't use their data.... surely silverstripe should be able to export this data properly...

I can see there are various suggestions in excel forums on how to export data to excel and convert these, but there seem to be no options on silverstripe to make this possible...can anyone help?
