I currently have a couple sites that require an ecommerce solution that have come onto my plate. Its the first foray I will be making into this area, but I need to take that step to cater to a wider range of clients.
From what I can tell this module is way off being a viable option in terms of stability, features and payment gateways. If I was a strong enough php developer I would love to contribute to the module, but unfortunately thats not me.
Is it worth working with this module, or should I look at intergrating with something like FoxyCart and making my clients sign into a different backend to manage their shop transactions?
If someone has another shop solution they use that works well, I'm open to suggestions too! (Just don't say oscommerce)
We were in the same situation a couple of months ago.
If it is a hi-volume webshop and you are looking for a one-stop solution without investing quite a lot of development time, I'd advise against using the Silverstripe module at this point.
We ended up using Magento which was an OK experience , it isn't nearly as horrible as OsCommerce and definitely worth a look.
However, I sure as hell hope the Silverstripe (including myself) will give the Commerce module some loving somewhere in the coming months. The same void the Silverstripe CMS fills can also be found in the Commerce arena (e.g. a lot of ugly and/or overcomplicated systems on the market). I'd love to have a customizable "Silverstripe tasting" commerce system !
If you want to use the SS ecommerce module then get the code from trunk/svn. Also the payment module. I got it working with 2.3.1 with not too much headache. But you need to manually update the ecommerce templates in the theme you're using, see some of my other posts about that subject here. The templates used in the themes are for the (current) stable ecommerce module only.
To answer your question more precisely, yes, for me it is worth it, and i'm going to set up another multilingual ecommerce site using it (the latest ecommerce and payment code from trunk and SS 2.3.2) in the next weeks.
However I'm aware that i might have to fix a few issues, as usual if not using the stable version.
Adamj, currently there is online Wastewater treatment systems Thailand which shows just three products for now, but nevertheless it has all relevant parts of ecommerce working, even multilingual. It is using 2.3.1 and ecommerce trunk. Feel free to place a test order, just write TEST in the address fields so they know to ignore the test order.
Due to current workload the next site with ecommerce will take a few weeks before going online.
