So I bought the Silverstripe book and worked through it and while I've got a better idea of how Silverstripe fits together and how to use it, I think I'm missing a whole chunk of knowledge at the basic end of things - basics of PHP and I guess mySQL.

So I'm curious if anyone has any tips on great books to learn the foundations of PHP in order to be able to understand what Silverstripe is doing a little better.

I've found this one which has a lot of good reviews - anyone read it and can comment on the relevance to Silverstripe?

I think anything about OOP php will certainly help.

I'm more or less in the same situation as you and I find trying to build An own module very good to learn. It's pretty tough, but you learn a lot.
