Not sure, if you mean can you place the CMS into by webserver, then yes - check here http://doc.silverstripe.org/suggested-web-hosts

2) Am i able to set up password access to the site?
yes - also for many members with tons of security - http://userhelp.silverstripe.org/for-website-administrators/changing-and-managing-users/

3) Is there a limit to number of pages?
not that I know of but if you are in the thousands then you'll want to store page data outside of the sitetree - http://www.ssbits.com/tutorials/2010/dataobjects-as-pages-part-1-keeping-it-simple/

4) Are there any costs?
nope BSD licence - even free to re brand as your own CMS and sell!

5) Are there any adverts/banners?
nope!

the silverstripe framework is sapphire and that with that you can create webapages, then there is a cms (built with sapphire).

both of these come in as php/js/html/ss that you upload to your website.

In other words you hots the installation that is an on-line CMS - the entire thing is online.

sorry if it not clear but I find it hard to describe in response to your question...

thanks, it might become evident when i s download and start to use it.
it sounds s though i download the software, make edits on my PC using that. Then i upload the entire site to silverstripe. Or does silverstripe not host the site? in which case, do i need to find a way to host it... i.e. free web space with an ISP

ok, so the ENTIRE site needs a host and then you edit the site on-line. You also have access to all the code.

you can download wamp/xampp and install silverstripe locally and develop locally. But the whole site (everything you download from silverstirpe.org and your database) needs to be be uploaded when you want peo0ple to see it ont he internet

Silverstripe *does not* host the site - there are some place that offer a dedicated silverstripe hosting. I have used several different hosts and each can have slightly different issues to get it installed and running (which is why I pointed you to the suggested hosts). silverstripe give all this away for free - they don't provide hosting free as well!

I doubt "free" webspace is gonna work out because you'll probably want a mysql database - if you find a free host, no ads with a mysql db - tell me where it is!

You might get away with using the sqlite module to use the "stand alone zero-configuration" database but in order to get staqrted I'd stick with mysql
