It's cleaned up in 2.3. tinymce in 2.2.x has a bunch of whacky code garbage, but clean in 2.3 so that won't happen.

I'm noticing a similiar problem with inserting images (or when my clients do) - img hspace, vspace and align values are being automatically inserted into the code with "null" values which messes up with the site compliancy - does anyone know why this is happening?

This is a bug with the version of tinymce and how it is implemented in SS 2.2.x. As I stated above, this is cleaned up and fixed in SS 2.3
