After a fresh installation of SilverStripe I've been trying to install a downloaded theme. I've followed the instructions I found on the internet which included editing the '_config.php' file which I have since restored to its original state as I later read you should select the site theme from the admin area.
I found the theme selector optioin the admin area and successfully saved the changes to the newly extracted folder (the theme name). However when I then view the site, expecting the see the new theme, I get a basic display of the Home page text stating 'Generated with the default ContentController.ss template'.
Obviously the theme change didn't work and nor has any others I've downloaded and tried. Is there something I've missed?
I really can't suss this out.
I'm running version 2.4 of silverstripe and have downloaded the 'pixelgreen' theme.

Just a note for newbies to SilverStripe.
Today I downloaded SS 2.4.4 and after I installed as per instructions, I changed the theme which had a name in the format "theme_name" and it just did not get picked up by the CMS admin area. I change the theme name to "themename" i.e. removed the "_" and it works now. Just a thought for newbies to consider.

have you seen the installation instructions for themes?
And it would be nice if you could be more specific on "themes not working", like :
Be precise and informative about your problem
- Describe the symptoms of your problem carefully and clearly.
- Describe the environment in which it occurs (machine, OS, application, whatever).
- Describe the research you did to try and understand the problem before you asked the question.
- Describe the diagnostic steps you took to try and pin down the problem yourself before you asked the question
