Thanks chinaski - ... I tried to do that, it didn't do anything. So, I put "2.4.8" in the silverstripe_version file in the cms folder... it worked! At least it shows the version now.
I appreciate the help and giving me the confidence to update the file ;)
It looks like the 2.4.8 release wasn't performed with the release scripts, because they didn't fully support 2.4.x.
I've moved them to a new repo (https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-installer/pull/26),
and added 2.4 support (https://github.com/chillu/silverstripe-buildtools/commit/0792d24b90ecfb37b9113d1951964f8f503b49c5).
So with the next release, this should not happen again - sorry!
