How do hierarchical security groups work?

I just noticed that security groups can be related hierarchically.
What is the practical implications of groups B and C being
children of group A? -

Don't quote me but I think this is due to the OOP nature of SS. Group B and C can be extended from Group A, where they can be given additional functionality.
