link dataobject to none, one or multiple usergroups

I want to link on dataobject in the dataobjectmanager popup to one or multiple usergroups. If none selected, the item can be seen by everyone, if one or more groups are selected, the item should only be shown to the given usergroup(s).
Does anyone have a clue how to do this? Examples welcome!
