Remove old database fields

I have removed some unnecessary fields from my page.php (fields I created before)
I thought /dev/build/ should rename those fields with fieldname_old ?But nothing happens. There is no notification while rebuilding the DB and fields won't change. What's wrong?

nothing wrong - the system is building or changing what is required and leaves alot of items behind
not a bad thing as if youput a typo into the table and dev/build you would any existing data
if you do want a clean up - https://github.com/smindel/silverstripe-dbplumber contains a "remove artefacts"
