custom layout of admin page

I have created a new page type with several fields that must be completed, but the layout of the admin page is vertical with each field appearing vertically one after another. Is there any way to change this to horizontal and define the length of the field boxes?
The data that goes into each field is quite minimal - 9 chars only in some instances. It would be great if I could put several fields across horizontally.

You could try putting several fields inside a FieldGroup or CompositeField, but to be honest this isn't something that I've done very much.
