How Do I let different user see different site content?

overloading SiteTree::canView() doesn't seem to be a good enough solution, since user will see the items is so there, except it looks grey and not viewable. Can anyone tell me how to make sure user won't 'see' certain items in the site content tree(like only a subtree) ?
