CompositeDateField gives error when not required

I have added a CompositeDateField to a form. It is not in the required list. It still presents a javascript error: Please ensure you have set all date values when left blank. If I turn off javascript validation the FormAction is not sent.
Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

I get this error in 2.3.6
