Category independent sorting?

I have Product Categories and Product Items, right now I have sorting set on Product Items and it is working fine. I am able to drag and drop sort Items for each category but then that sort order applies to all Items in all Categories. The Items and Categories relation is a many-to-many, is there any way I can setup sorting for Items within each Category so that the Item sort order is independent for each Category?
