Passing a value from product page to shopping cart

I added a an optionset field in the CMS to get two options, made sure that I added the database fields, but now I don't know how to "call" the variable in the checkout page. Anyone know?
I've checked tutorials but do not see anything that addresses this issue.
I appreciate any assistance with this.
