user based MarketPlace: using e-commerce module?

Can the E-commerce (or any eshop module) be used to create a user based marketplace. eg: etsy or artfire?
Where each user (of a certain usertype) has a 'shop' related to their user account.
Where they can list and manage their sale items?
Ideally I would like to be able to develop with V3 as well.. but not a strict requirement.Cheers
